Is it possible to do anything with the column sums you get in a grouping report like subtract one from the other to give a balance.

I’m afraid it’s not supported, if you would like to do more calculations on reports, it may need custom scripting to made a new report page or copy the the full report content to spreadsheet and do calculations on spreadsheet applications.
